Our Birthday Ritual

 Our Birthday Rituals 🎉

In our home, birthdays aren’t just a date on the calendar—they’re a whole season, a love language, a heartfelt tradition, and a full-blown celebration of everything that makes my kids them. Over the years, we’ve carved out little rituals that turn each birthday into something magical, meaningful, and unapologetically ours.

The Tradition of the T-Shirts
The birthday season kicks off with—drumroll—custom t-shirts! Every year, I design shirts based on whatever they’ve been obsessed with that trip around the sun—chess, unicorns, dinosaurs, baseball, you name it. It’s my way of bottling up their current world in cotton and color. Watching them strut around in their personalized tee? Heart. Full.

📸 The Annual Photoshoot
Next up: our yearly family photoshoot. It’s not just about tracking who’s grown an inch or lost a tooth—it’s about freezing those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it in-between moments. Bonus: it gives me an excuse to get behind the camera and unleash my inner Annie Leibovitz. These photos are tiny time capsules—complete with giggles, bribes for smiles, and occasional chaos.

🎈 The Sacred Theme Hunt
Choosing the birthday theme is nothing short of a sacred quest. It’s a mix of what they adore, what makes their eyes light up, and a dash of “what can I pull off without selling a kidney?” From unicorn kingdoms to arcade mania to full-on superhero HQ—we go all in. Budget-friendly magic is an art form.

🎂 The Cake That Steals the Show
Ah, the cake. The showstopper. For the last 10 years, I’ve made it my mission to ensure their birthday cake isn’t just dessert—it’s them in frosting. I’ve been known to wake up at 2 a.m. with cake ideas. True story. These cakes are edible storybooks, capturing their personality and passions, one layer at a time.

📝 The Birthday Blog
And my absolute favorite ritual: the birthday blog. Every year, I write them a love letter in disguise—a blog post summing up their year. The things they said, the way they moved through the world, their quirks, their giggles, their wins (and sometimes their tantrums). It’s my attempt to bottle up their childhood, one story at a time. One day, I hope they’ll read them and feel how deeply, wildly, unconditionally loved they’ve always been.

These little rituals? They’re my heart on display—stitched together with sparkles, sugar, snapshots, and all the love I can pour into a single day. Because childhood is a blink. And I want to remember every blink of it. 🥹💛
