Growing up, I hated my hair. Back in the day, definition of beautiful hair (or as most hair oil advertisements projected it) was – hair that moves.
Plus, it wasn’t easy living with my sister who had hair that moved. Long, thick, shiny, straight hair. I loved her hair. I had thick, black hair that grew up, not down, ruined school photos because it made me look like I was wearing a motorcycle helmet, and frustrated my mom so much that she resorted to military cuts that had me constantly mistaken for a boy. Coarse and curly, it most definitely did not move.
No one wanted to sit behind me in the school coz they couldn’t see the board. Do you blame them?
For the longest time, I resorted to hair straighteners, blow dryers and hair sprays. But spending 45 minutes every morning battling my curls was exhausting. On days when I did dare leave it to dry naturally people would comment, ‘Is that your natural hair? It’s gorgeous.’ But I never believed them.
I had always known about ‘Curly Girl method’ but the idea of bidding goodbye to my hair iron was daunting. I didn’t travel anywhere without my hair iron. To give you a reference, the first thing I packed in my hospital bag when my water broke was my hair iron. There! I confessed it. However, I had reached a point where I realized that I had to stop using heat, or I’ll hafta part ways with my hair and that’s when my CG Method journey began.
It’s only been over 2 months of using CG Method, but I’m loving it so much that I think it’s my responsibility to enlighten other girls like me who’ve spent their lives battling their hair, using damaging heat and processing techniques in order to achieve glossy straight hair.
Here are a few things that I’ve been doing:
· Said goodbye to hair iron, blow dryer and hairbrush
· Replaced cotton pillowcases with silk pillowcases
· No towel drying. Let it air dry. Times when I’m getting late, I use an old t-shirt to dry my hair
· Use cold water to wash my hair
· Started oiling my hair after a decade
· Apply products to soaking wet hair
· Invested in products that are free of harsh chemicals – silicone, sulphate, parabens, and alcohol.
I won’t lie – the first few weeks of using CG method was not the prettiest. I was embarrassed to even step out, but I’ve realized that my journey is about much more than just hair. It’s about being comfortable in myself in a way I have never been before; not freaking out when it rains or when I go swimming, and celebrating rather than hiding my difference from the crowd. Who would have thought that hair can mean so much?
